THE WEEKLY EXAMINER AND ISLAND ARGUS, FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1885
DEATH:
MACDONALD - A Souris Man Drowned
- By private letter to a friend, we learn that a sad accident took place on the United States coast, on the 29th of April last, whereby an Islander and three other men lost their lives by drowning. The Islander was Capt. John R. McDonald, of Souris. The three others were named Richard Borden, Robert Hingley and Michael Gracey. They belonged to the schooner Neponsit, commanded by Captain Frye. She was off the Virginia coast when the sad accident occurred.

The particulars, as given by Mr. Alex. McPhee of Big Marsh, are as follows:– The men were out in a seine boat when she shipped a sea, which half filled her. McDonald and the other sailors bailed her out, and when the boat was dry she took a sudden lurch, and turned keel upwards. The men succeeded in getting on the boat's bottom six times, and were as many times washed off. The wind blew so strong at the time that it was impossible for McPhee and a companion to rescue them. The sea was running mountains high, and McPhee could not get his dory an inch ahead, much less reach the men in time to save life.

Capt. McDonald was deservedly well liked. He leaves a grief-stricken widow and three little children in East Boston to mourn his sad end.
DEATH: MACMILLAN - At Kensington, on Thursday, the 14th inst., Stephen McMillan, Esq., in the 47th year of his age. Requiescat in pace.

[The circumstances of Mr. McMillan's death are sad. He was returning to his home on the night of the 8th inst. His horse became unmanageable and ran away. Mr. McMillan was thrown violently from the sulkey, and he was taken to his home suffering terribly. His physicians found he had received a severe contusion below the left shoulder, and that the lower portion of the body, both legs and arms, were paralyzed. Hopes of his recovery were entertained till the evening before his death.

The funeral took place on the 16th inst., to the Indian River Church Cemetery. It was attended by over one hundred carriages. In Mr. McMillan's death Kensington loses one of its best citizens, a man who was dearly beloved and respected. To his wife and five children we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

THE WEEKLY EXAMINER AND ISLAND ARGUS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1885
DEATH:
MACCORMACK - Obituary
- A lingering illness terminated on the 16th inst., in the peaceful repose of Donald McCormack, Esq., one of the pioneers of Black Bush, in the 76th year of his age.

His early days were days of toil; and with that persevering industry, characteristic of a strong and noble mind, he eventually succeeded in carving out of the green woods a homestead of ease and comfort. To-day the well-tilled farms, substantial buildings and tasteful surroundings, tell us what kind of a man this is who left us.

But we have another and more reliable criterion of his real worth. He reared a large family, and reared them well. Early instructions and good example produced their fruit. His children grew up a joy to him in his younger years, in his declining years a comfort and support. Inheritors of their father's virtues none are today more respected in our community than they.

His good and useful life met with a fitting close. Finding the hand of death resting on him, he quietly arranged his temporal affairs, and thereafter unreservedly abandoned himself into the arms of his Creator, calmly awaiting the end. Fortified by the rites of Holy Mother Church, surrounded by the chosen companion of his life, and the surviving members of his family, he breathed his last. The large funeral cortege that accompanied his remains to St. Margaret's cemetery, testified to the high esteem in which he was held.

The Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Pastor, Rev. Gregory McDonald, and the Last Absolution was given by Rev. D. J. Gillis, of St. Columba.   COM.

THE DAILY PATRIOT, THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 1885
DEATH:
MACKIESON - OBITUARY
- As will be seen by the notice in another column, Charlottetown has lost one of its oldest inhabitants.

John MacKieson, Surgeon and M.D., was born in the parish of Campsie, Sterlingshire, Scotland, on the 16th day of October, 1795. He received his education in the University of Glasgow, and graduated as a Doctor of Surgery and Medicine, in April, 1815. He arrived in Charlottetown on the 15th of November, 1821.

It will be seen from the above that Dr. MacKieson was in the 90th year of his age, and has been practising his profession for more than 70 years, of which more than 63 years have been spent in Charlottetown. On the 11th of February, 1830, he was married to Matilda Brecken, who died some years ago.

Dr. Mackieson, like most of his countrymen, was a Presbyterian, and on his arrival in this country connected himself with the congregation of St. James' Church. In 1825, when Alexander Birnie, Esq., of London, England, gave a deed of conveyance by lease and release to the Trustees of St. James' Church of that land on which is erected their present beautiful Church, young Dr. MacKieson was one of the Trustees. He has therefore been in office almost since the inception of the congregation.

Not only on the board of trustees, but as an elder of the Church for some 50 years, Dr. Mackieson has had an oversight of the spiritual and temporal welfare of the church. But few men are permitted to labor for the benefit of their fellow-men so many years.

But his work is done, – work which covers the alloted span of man's life, and which was continued down to the very last, in taking part in the ordination and induction of Elders in St. James' Church last Sabbath week.

As a citizen, the deceased has been distinguished for many years as an excellent physician and surgeon, especially to a generation which has passed away. His memory will be dear for his urbanity, for his general social character and the consistent purity of his daily life.

We extend our heart-felt sympathy to the relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as to the congregation of St. James' Church.
DEATH: At his residence, Kelvin Grove, Pownal St., this morning, John Mackieson, Esq., Surgeon, and M.D., in the 90th year of his age.

THE CHARLOTTETOWN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1885
DEATH:
CONROY - Francis J. Conroy, Esq.
- It is our melancholy duty today to record the death of Francis J. Conroy, Esquire, who departed this life after a long and severe illness, at the residence of his brother, early on Monday morning last. He was a son of the late Nicholas Conroy, Esquire, and a grandnephew of His Lordship the Bishop of Charlottetown. He was born at Tignish on the 22nd of August, 1855, and was educated at St. Dunstan's College and in Montreal. Returning to Charlottetown he commenced the study of the law, and was admitted to the Bar in October, 1879. A month later, upon the death of his father, he was appointed Registrar of Deeds, whence he was transferred in 1880 to the office of Provincial Auditor, a position he held until the spring of 1882, when he associated himself with Mr. A. B. Warburton in the practice of his profession.

Mr. Conroy was a man of brilliant parts who, had his life been spared, would doubtless have made a name for himself among his countrymen. Unassuming in his manner, he possessed good social qualities which, together with a firm rectitude and a generous and unselfish nature, surrounded him with many friends. Upon the appointment of the present Lieutenant Governor in 1884, Mr. Conroy accepted the position of his Private Secretary which he held until failing health compelled him to retire last spring.

His remains were conveyed yesterday morning to St. Dunstan's Cathedral, where a Solemn Mass of Requiem was sung by His Lordship Bishop McIntyre, assisted by Rev. Fathers Gallant and Bourke. After the completion of the Mass and Funeral office, the body was conveyed to the Railway Station and thence to Tignish where it will be interred to-day. At St. Dunstan's College on Monday morning a Requiem Mass was also chanted for the repose of his soul.

At a meeting of the Law Society held on Monday, the following resolutions were passed:

RESOLVED, That the Law Society of Prince Edward Island have heard with deep regret of the death of Francis J. THE DAILY EXAMINER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1885
DEATH:
KICKHAM - Obituary
- The obsequies of Ruth Kickham, aged 16, took place in St. Dunstan's Cathedral, on the 2nd ult, at 9 o'clock. The body was brought from the Convent of Notre Dame, where she died, and the Rev. Father Gallant sang the Mass of Requiem and gave the absolutions. In a sense, the deceased was a child of the Convent, for her home had been there for some years back. Her parents were well satisfied to leave the fragile health of their child to the nursing of the kind sisters. The little deceased was a "Child of Mary," and many of her sister associates in that beautiful Society were present at the last rites. One of these, of nearly her own age, has twined the following little wreath of verse to the memory of her departed sister :–

The still white walls of the Convent

Lie deep in shade today,

For the Angel of Death has come

And called dear Ruth away.

But there shines through Death's dark valley

Light from a star-crowned head,

And the Mother of God round Ruth

Protecting arms has spread.

She brings her to the throne of God,

An offering pure and fair,

And the crown of "Child of Mary"

Gleams through her golden hair.

Now while before the throne of God,

In silent, heartfelt prayer,

Forget not those whose earnest wish

Is to be thought of there.
